Edna Fourie Gallery - The exclusive home of my art
'Art that feeds the soul'
For a very long time I had been aware of the necessity to bring my work together under one roof. Working with different themes and exhibiting in venues throughout South Africa diffused the message within my work.
I have consciously chosen to follow my own path instead of the establishment or
commercial route. This has enabled me to stay true to my own vision and pace.
On the 1st of December 2007, I opened my gallery in the peaceful village of McGregor.
This is now the exclusive home of my art.
My vision for this gallery is to create a soul-enriching sanctuary with a strong sense of place. It is about an experience rather than
a look.
My paintings tell my story (of transformation) - which is really the story of all of us.
In 2010 I started a permanent collection of my major work to anchor this story.
The gallery now operates like an evolving essay with the new work for sale joining the permanent collection in an organic way.

Iris Iris
Luminosity unlocks something we are all looking for:
the transformation of the ordinary and the visible into something that suggests
a much more powerful invisible world.

Rose Rose
The rose is an ancient sacred symbol of the divine feminine. My rose paintings highlight the spiral unfolding as we witness the return of the feminine principle [nurturing, caring, gentleness...] to our global society.

Lily Lily
I love the elegant simplicity of the lily. Light seems to emanate from within rather than just bouncing off the surface. Thus they become receptacles of light.

Poppy Poppy
I wanted to capture the qualities of fragility and tenderness which I saw in these poppies. Struggling to achieve the desired effect with oil paint, I eventually resorted to staining the canvas with tea and coffee. This gave me the delicate surface I was searching for. I realised only in retrospect that this particular series expressed the conception of my gallery, symbolised through the female shape present in these images.

Read about XPIRED
XPIRED vs FRESH
This installation consists of a huge glass jar filled with black wooden crosses and a label stating XPIRED, reminiscent of the food we buy with expiry dates.
The fine print on the label confirms that martyrdom, self sacrifice, sentimentality, victimhood... are best discarded like food that has gone off.
Another identical glass jar is filled with twigs partly painted white to emphasise the V shape [ symbol of the feminine principle].
The label states FRESH which refers to the return of the female principle to restore a more balanced approach to life.
The fine print encourages us to reconnect with our joy and truth, celebrate life and live our passions.

Read about Venus Birthing
Venus Birthing
This painting tells the story of restoration of balance in the world by recovering the feminine principle [symbolised by Venus] in a masculine orientated world - thereby restoring harmony through a full partnership between the two.
The sword cuts away the layers and the ropes which have bound her legs together for so long. This frees her to bring forth new life again.
The top half refers to Boticelli's Venus [Rennaissance], but the sturdy legs belong to Venus of Willendorf, a fertility sculpture dating back to the Stone Age. Thus there is also restoration of balance between the ancient world, which honored and respected nature, and our modern world which has divorced itself from nature.
We are experiencing the birthing of a new Renaissance - a restoration of balance between technology and nature. The essence of this process is about each one of us reconnecting with our spiritual self.
How did this painting happen? This canvas was stored in the attic of my home where owls were breeding. The result was a canvas soiled with owl droppings. As I prepared to replace the canvas I felt compelled and encouraged to work with the stained canvas, using the marks as guidance.
As the painting progressed it became a process of recognising familiar shapes appearing amidst the richly textured surface.
